Global Art Scenes - City Project -

Art 333 - Global Art Scenes - City Project - 50 points
Choose a city outside the United States and report on the current art scene there.
There are three parts to this assignment: 1. an annotated bibliography (due 11/14) 2. a map of the city that guides the viewer through the art scene (due 11/14) 3. an essay explaining the art scene in this city and the issues that frame it (due 11/14)
Each part of the assignment is explained below.
The point of this project is to shift our focus away from prominent art centers that tend to define the parameters of our discussion of contemporary art. The city you choose needs to be outside of the United States. The main issue in selecting a city is whether you can access enough reliable information to allow you to construct an impression of the art scene/scenes in that city. ! List of cities: You are encouraged to choose a city based on your own interests, the only requirement is that it is outside of the United States, and that you can access enough reliable information about it. If you would like some suggestions, the following is a list of cities with contemporary art scenes that you should be able to gather adequate information about. This list is far from being comprehensive, so feel free to choose a city that is not listed here.
Auckland Bamako Bangkok Beijing Beirut Berlin Bogotá Budapest Buenos Aires Cairo Cali Cluj Dakar Delhi Dubai Glasgow Gwangju Havana Ho Chi Minh City Hong Kong Istanbul Jerusalem Johannesburg Lagos Lima Lisbon Madrid Manila Melbourne Mexico City Montreal Moscow Mumbai  Oslo
Prague Rio de Janeiro San Juan São Paulo Shanghai Sharjah Seoul Stockholm Sydney Taipei Tangier Tokyo Vancouver Warsaw Yogyakarta YokohamaSources: Many of your sources will be accessed online. Put care into determining the validity of the sources you are referencing. Cross-check your sources. Websites for art venues can serve be useful, they sometimes have an archive of the exhibitions held there, for example. In some cases they will list “partnering institutions,” which can help you locate other local or regional art organizations. You should also be able to access print-based sources through a library search (be sure to search the CSULB library, search again on LINK+, and search the library’s
online databases).

Part 3. Map - 20 points due on Tuesday, 11/14 - please go to this link to see a sample map focused on Los Angeles:
https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?mid=zCTaYKwsoPb0.kme8su50uj1Q The goal is to tell a story about contemporary art in a city through the use of a map. Your essay will describe the scene in words, the map offers a different experience, one that is spatial and visual. Maps can help us think more about the structure of a specific place. What the map will consist of: ! 1. A clear, navigable map of the city with key elements labeled. This can be a map made using Google Maps, or it could be a handmade map. ! 2. Each key element needs to be labeled with the following
things: ! ! -The name of the specific site ! ! -A link to a related website, if applicable
https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?mid=zCTaYKwsoPb0.kme8su50uj1Q
https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?mid=zCTaYKwsoPb0.kme8su50uj1Q
! ! -A written text explaining the importance of each place. This needs to ! ! be your own, original text (it is not acceptable to cut-and- paste ! ! descriptions into your map). *You will also create a document listing all of these map texts and you will submit it through the dropbox on Beachboard so that an “originality report” can be generated.
Map Submission Guidelines: ! If you use an online mapmaking tool: paste the specific URL for your map on the ! first page of your essay between your heading and your title. In addition, paste ! the URL for your map into the comment box where you upload your essay in the ! dropbox on Beachboard.
! If you made a physical map: bring your map to class on the day that the essay is ! due in dropbox. In the comment box where you upload your essay, please write ! that you made a physical map, and submitted it in class. Also, include a note on ! the first page of your essay (between your heading and title) that you submitted a ! hard-copy of your map.
Tools for Map Making: The most straightforward tool for making your map is Google Maps. However, you need a gmail account to create, save, and share a map in “my maps”. Once you have created and saved your map, you can “share” it. Choose the option of generating a URL that you can email. Then paste that URL into your essay and the comment box as described above. Here is a link to a YouTube tutorial: Witton, Anne. “Create Custom Google Maps - Step-by-step Tutorial.” YouTube. ! YouTube, 15 Apr. 2014. Please let me know if you find another useful mapmaking tool.
Part 4. Essay - 25 points due on Tuesday, 11/14 Paper length: 700-1000 words, approx. 3-4 pages double-spaced.
Your essay will describe the city’s art scene.
Key questions to address (you are not limited to these questions, adapt your paper to reflect the relevant issues that emerge in the city you are focused on):

-Does the art scene in this city tend to be regionally focused or globally focused? (For example, say we are looking at Tokyo, are most of the artists exhibited there from Japan or from Asia, or is there a broad, international mix of artists on view there? -How do the broader political, social, cultural, economic, and environmental contexts shape or influence the art scene in this city? ! -what kind of government operates in the city? ! -is censorship an issue? ! -are there specific historical or political issues that define the place? ! -how does local culture influence specific aspects of the art scene? -Are there visible advantages to working in art in this city; are there visible limitations to working in art in this city?
Essay Formatting and Citation Guidelines written assignments for this class need to follow these guidelines
Paper Layout - 1-inch margins on top, bottom, and sides - 12-point standard font - double-spaced - you can follow either the MLA format (the typical style for the humanities) or the Chicago style format (the style used for art history).
See the Purdue Online Writing Lab (OWL) for citation guidelines https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/747/01/
Paper Length: Paper length requirements are based on word count. Word count is based on the words in the body of your essay, not on headings, bibliography, etc. note: If you are struggling to meet a minimum length requirement on a paper, go back to the drawing board: brainstorm, make lists, freewrite.
Citing Sources: Whenever you are quoting or paraphrasing written sources, you need to cite them. For citation guidelines you can choose from the MLA style or the Chicago style in my classes (the important thing is to understand that there are different styles, and that different disciplines have different expectations). For in-depth guidelines for these two styles, revisit the website listed above:
