Are negative reinforcement and punishment synonymous? Why or why not?
2. So, how could you use positive reinforcement to change negative behavior instead of punishment such as taking your child's computer away?
3. Clinicians working with clients with substance abuse and other addictive behavioral problems use behavioral modification. Do you think behavior modification helps or hinders people with these problems?
4. What do you think reinforces addictions such as shopping or gambling?
5. What about criminal behavior? What reinforces that?
I really like Maslow too, Sharon. Indeed, you made some very interesting points about Maslow's theory. I agree that self-actualization IS an inside job and I really like the quotation you found. I think at this point in the class, the really important point is how many times Maslow's theory is applicable. It seems like every class I teach, I find a point where I am drawing (or including a picture) of Maslow's hierarchy to illustrate a point. Often I would find myself drawing it on the board for when I taught a psychology of love and compassion class; making a point about how belongingness is a need all humans have. Even when I was doing corporate training, I found a use for Maslow's hierarchy.
6. Can anyone think of other ways Maslow's hierarchy might apply?
You identified an important point about positive reinforcement. If you depend on an outside source of that reinforcement, it's hard to maintain. The ultimate form of reinforcement comes from within (intrinsic motivation). It is when someone does those good behaviors just because they, themselves feel good about it. It's like many of you who are striving for good grades and degrees. You don't do it because your parents are giving you money or even praise. You do it because you feel good when you achieve that good grade; when you achieve that one more step toward your degree. The motivation becomes intrinsic.
7. However, Bandura believes, "Intrinsic rewards are not always sufficient" (Feist, Feist & Roberts, 2013, p. 498) and I think this is true at the beginning, but it's my belief the motivation must become intrinsic for the change in behavior to last. What do you all think?
8. Which theorist(s) or group of theorists did you connect with most? What was it about his/her/their theories which appealed to you? Why?
