Charles Ball [Fifty Years in Chains] lived may have shaped their life circumstances. When writing your paper, you may want to

consider such issues as: How did urban slavery differ from rural slavery/plantation slavery? Why were slaves fearful of being “sold

South”? How did Cotton, Tobacco, Rice and Sugar plantations differ from one another? You want to be sure to consider such questions

in light of Frederick Douglass’s and Charles Ball’s narrative and the opportunities or lack thereof in each man’s life.

opportunity to think creatively and analytically about historical events and people. The paper is due october 6. This paper ask

that you examine these primary source (Fredrick And Charles) documents and write an essay based on a thesis statement. A thesis is

a focused argument based on your reading of the primary documents. The papers should use evidence from the primary documents to

support your thesis (please see the end of this document for helpful hints on writing this assignment).The student may one of three

essay questions to write on for each book. Papers are to be comprised of at least four double-spaced pages or 1,000 words minimum.

The two Papers are worth 30% (total) of your final grade. There should be adequate and appropriate citations of sources, when

consulted. Plagiarism needs to be fully understood and will not be tolerated. Copying from a website or a textbook is plagiarism.

Remember these rules of writing: (1) have a clear central thesis; (2) maintain a consistent “through-line” (argument) from

beginning to end; (3) use details and cite your sources; (4) be creative; (5) don’t use words you aren’t familiar with; (6) leave

time between your first and final drafts for revisions; and (7) Refrain from using the internet in writing these papers Citing

Sources: Short quotations and details drawn directly from primary and secondary sources can greatly enhance your argument, but they

need to be cited.
