assigned novels as examples of a female bildungsroman in a way that is meaningful to you. Be sure to show that you have thought

about Sue Fuderer’s “Introduction,” but make this topic your own. In forming your analysis be sure to consider the similarities

among all four novels as these can help you unify your essay. For instance, you might argue that all four novels are actually

Kunstlerroman since the women in them use art as a way of discovering self. Or you might focus on a particular characteristic in

the bildungsroman, such as the heroine’s tendency to grow “down” rather than “up,” to make an argument about the women in the

novels we have studied. Choose the focus that interests you, but be sure to form one thesis statement that governs all four novels.

I realize that four pages is not much space to discuss four novels, but try to be as specific as you can in your analysis of the

texts. In other words, quote directly from the novels and refer to specific scenes to prove your ideas. Be sure that your essay
