conduct a SWOTT analysis on your current professional status
If the marketing concepts do not seem readily applicable to your professional situation,
Let's consider a concept that we are discussing this week, the SWOTT analysis. You can readily conduct a SWOTT analysis on your current
professional status. What strengths and weaknesses do you possess from an employer standpoint. What is happening in the external market that
impacts your profession? What can you do as a result of these uncontrollable factors?
Marketing yourself can be a great way to apply the concepts we'll be discussing. For example, when you go into a job interview focus on what
the buyer (the interviewer) needs and then tailor what you can offer to meet those needs. Stated another way, position your attributes so as
to be perceived as benefits by the interviewer. Only after the potential employer sees the benefits you would provide do you focus on your
needs- like 10 weeks vacation, stock options, etc. (Just kidding on the last part!)
When you are interviewing you are definitely in the position to 'buy' or not 'buy' depending upon how well the position fits your needs.
However, by putting the needs of the potential employer first, you can position yourself to help make sure that you are in fact, in a position
to determine the buy. After you have been assured of their interest in your offering and the benefits that you would provide, then it is time
to fully determine whether you want to buy.
Consider your own personal SWOTT analysis and perhaps even share it with the class.
