Is revisionism, as it relates to the Holocaust, good scholarship that avoids the political and ethnic biases of previous historians, or is it merely its own form of political and ethnic bias?
One of the problems with studying history is that, over time, it seems that every event has been examined, researched, written about and reviewed to the point that we can almost say, "There is nothing else to say." However, if you look at the American Civil War - the most written about event in American History - one would realize that historians are still "ploughing the same ground" with the hope of turning up something new to write about and are still churning out dozens of new books and articles every day. Often historians - and psuedo historians - turn to what is referred to as a "revisionist viewpoint." This involves taking the facts as they are known and completely reintepreting them (revising) or declaring heretofore accepted facts as baseless and replacing them with "new facts" or radical reinterpretations! The goal of history and the historian should be an accurate, objective evaluation of the material available and an objective written account. However, who is to determine what is accurate and what is objective? Recent "revisionist scholarship" on the Holocaust represents one of the most radical revisionist schools. Traditional scholars refer to this as "Holocaust Denial." The revisionists refer to their interpretations and writing as the more accurate and politically ubiased account of the events of 1933-1945. Read the material uploaded for the Discussion post and consider the following. Is revisionism, as it relates to the Holocaust, good scholarship that avoids the political and ethnic biases of previous historians, or is it merely its own form of political and ethnic bias? Are there other examples of Historical revision that you have run across? Remember that we looked at Columbus as hero or villian...was that a form of revisionism? Are conflicting interpretations of the effects of the Industrial Revolution a form of revisionism? Also use the following link: http://codoh.com/gcgv/gcfaur.html
