Latinos are an important and growing group of voters in the United States. Both major U.S. political parties have a large stake in attracting their affinity and votes. Democrats have enjoyed strong support from Latinos in presidential elections, and Latinos most often identify with them. Latinos also see Democrats as the party best able to handle important political issues.
The following figure shows three ways in which to gauge Latinos’ preference for the two major political parties.
Though Democrats have an edge in Latino support, the data on party identification among Latinos suggest that a growing number of Latinos may be choosing the Republican Party. In the 2016 election, Democrat Hillary Clinton garnered 65 percent of the Latino vote according to some exit polls, less than did President Obama in 2012. This underscores the extent to which Latino voters may be a group for which both parties
will actively compete. however, other scholars claimed that Latinos supported Clinton by as much as 8o percent.
Consider the data on voting patterns as well as the trend and magnitude of difference in Latino party identification and beliefs.
