Organizational Assessment

Organizational Assessment The goal of this assignment is to help you do the first step in what will eventually be your research proposal. You will work with a partner on this project. Together, you will find an organization (preferably higher education or non-profit) that you can work with to conduct an
organizational analysis. You will conduct your organizational analysis by collecting and interpreting qualitative data. It is likely that you
will need to make site visits, conduct interviews with organizational members, and investigate the online presence of your organization to
fully understand the organization you choose.I have provided some questions that might help guide your analysis. This list is not exhaustive and should only be used as a guide.  You can, and should, ask additional questions to fully analyze your organization.1. Briefly describe the organization (e.g., mission, size, location)2. What message is conveyed by the physical setting?  What can you infer from the building itself? Signage? Furnishing and décor? 3. What is the organization’s history?
4. What values does the organization espouse? What are its dominant values?
5. How do leaders reinforce these values and norms and build/maintain the organizational culture?
6. How do people get ahead? What does it take to do well? To stay out of trouble?
7. Who is considered deviant in the culture and why?
8. How are good employees rewarded?
9. How are bad employees handled?
10. How does the organization respond to crises? What about crises for which there is no written
policy (e.g., when funding is unexpectedly cut, etc.)?
11. How are new members trained and socialized?
12. What kinds of stories do old-timers tell new employees about the organization?
13. Who are the organization’s heroes and why?
14. Is there anything that cannot be talked about?
15. How do people exercise power?
16. How are decisions made?
14. What do you consider
the organization’s strengths and weaknesses? 15. How open is the organization to change and innovation? For this assignment, your group is required to write a short (3-5 page) paper describing your findings. This assignment is worth 50 points. Research Proposal (100 points) Based on the course readings, assignments, exercises and your organizational assessment, design a quantitative researchproposal that addresses any problems you noted in your assessment, or areas that you believe have room for improvement. Make a good case for any intervention you
recommend and how it will be implemented. Your proposal should be no longer than 10 pages and should include the following:1. Description of the problem or issue (1-2 pages)2. Brief but thorough literature review (6-8 pages)3. Proposed intervention and methodology (1-2 pages)Although you worked with a partner to analyze your organization, I expect each person to complete this project individually. You are free to write about anything that you discovered in your organizational analysis.  Therefore, it is likely that you and your partner will focus on different issues that you may have found. However, even if you are writing about the same issue, you can have very different ideas of how to intervene in addressing the issue. Therefore, while your papers may be similar in theme, they should be very different in content. Your paper will be worth 100 points. Ideally, this paper could be used as a springboard to conduct your proposed research with the ultimate goal of extending the research proposal beyond the classroom (e.g., conference publication or academic journal publication). I am happy to continue working with students who wish to continue their work at the conclusion of the semester, if the end product of this assignment is well thought out and feasible. Research Proposal Presentation (50 points)  For our last day of class (December 9th) we will meet as one big group to present our research ideas. Section 002 will have the morning to present their ideas, while Section 003 will have the afternoon. You must prepare a poster presentation for this assignment. You will be required to stand by your poster for two hours, discussing your research and answering questions from other students and faculty. The schedule of our last meeting is below:8:00-9:00 Breakfast and Poster preparation for Section 0029:000-11:00 Section 002 Poster Presentation11:00-1:00 Lunch and Poster preparation for Section 0031:00-3:00 Section 003 Poster Presentation3:00-5:00 Course Debrief and Discussion
