Essay 1: Expanding the Single Story
STEP 2: First Draft: Review the required parts below and write a rough draft (sometimes called a “shifty first draft”). You’ll receive a “map” to help you organize your thoughts and then start writing.
Required Parts:
1) Introduction: Lead into your narration of the “single story” situation and catch the reader’s interest with a “hook”.
2) Thesis Statemeiit: End the introduction by stating the specific “single story” that turned out to be inaccurate.
Example: My impression of the city of Tacoma was incredibly nhow and uninformed, based only upon my false assumptions.
3) arration: Tell the story of how the single story had been formed. Be sure to use short detail and “paint a picture” for your reader.
4) Turning Point: What changed or expanded the story? Explain how the single story became a more expanded and informed viewpoint.
Explain the new viewpoint.
5) SO WHAT? What does the topic of your paper show about causes and consequences of incomplete understandings or misunderstandings?
(This could be the paper’s conclusion.)
