Sustainability: Should we eat meat? What are the environmental/ethical issues around meat production in the United States (or other countries)?

Final Project Description Due 5/8 Deliverable: 5--8 page research paper, double spaced, 12 point New Times Roman font, (1250--2000 word research paper if
using numerous bullet points/graphs/etc). Must include at least 5 citations from primary and secondary sources, using proper APA format for citations,
footnotes/endnotes and bibliography. This paper is meant to be a synthesis of all the topics discussed throughout the semester. The topic is completely open to student choice and interest, but it is highly recommended to get the subject approved by the teaching staff. This is a list of examples of topics that would fit into the course, feel free to explore one of these topics, or create a topic of your own choosing on the subjects discussed.
• Sustainability: Should we eat meat? What are the environmental/ethical issues around meat production in the United States (or other countries)?
• Is there a place for Genetically Modified Organisms in a sustainable food system?
• Organic vs. Non--organic. Is organic always the best choice? What factors could limit the environmental or nutritional benefits of eating “organic”?
• Make a case for a vegetarian diet. As world population grows, will it be necessary for us to move to a more vegetarian diet?
• Do insects play a role in future diets? • Seafood – is it sustainable? Can aquaculture feed us all? • History: What is the history of the term “organic agriculture”? Or,
conversely, what is the history of the term “conventional agriculture” • Look at the history of one of the world’s great cuisines – Chinese,
Indian, French, Italian. How has that cuisine changed over time? What factors have lead to that change? How do the food systems of the wealthy affect food systems of the poor, and vice versa?
• Analyze the history of ethnic foods in the United States. -- Research the history of restaurants – either fine dining, or fast food.
• How did the “Columbian Exchange” affect food systems throughout the world?
• What is “authenticity” in cooking? In an age of globalization, are there any “authentic” forms of cooking left?
• How do cultural identity and cuisine relate? Religious identity and cuisine?
• Foods and Nutrition: -- Choose one of the cooking methods we discussed and look at how that cooking method is expressed around the world (ie the
technique of long, slow cooking of meats is expressed as BBQ in America, ragouts in the Mediterranean region, hot pots in Korea, etc).
• Analyze a specific diet – cultural (Mediterranean, Okinawan, etc.) or fad (Atkins, Paleo, etc) and research the cultural context. How did the diet come about, was it a result of current scientific thinking or was it a reaction against current scientific thinking? How do the diets hold up over time?
This paper is a large percentage of the final grade of the course and as such research should begin early in the semester. Research should meet academic standards discussed in GWAR (if students have not taken GWAR or are currently taken it). The project is very open to student interest but should follow set standards for academic writing, using peer reviewed sources rather than non--peer reviewed or mass market sources (ie Wikipedia, etc).
Grading will be based on the following: 20% length requirements 40% content (thesis, supporting evidence, adequately addressing opposing viewpoints) 20% grammar, syntax, spelling 20% proper use of APA citations, proper use of sources

Evaluate the impact of business tort liability on the pharmaceutical industry in general.

You may be familiar with personal torts such as negligence; however, business torts are different as they are being committed not against the person but rather against its intangible assets. Think about what this means and how each aspect of your work might result in a business tort being committed.
Assignment Steps
Resources: Legal Environment of Business: Online Commerce, Business Ethics, and Global Issues: Ch. 5, Ch. 6 and Ch. 7; Legal Source database located in the Week 3 Electronic Reserve Readings
Scenario: In the midst of the ongoing rhetoric and movement to achieve Tort Reform, business tort liability must be acknowledged and planned for as a reality. As the manager of legal risk and corporate governance for a major multi-national pharmaceutical corporation, the board of directors has commissioned you to work alongside your CEO and General Counsel to prepare a report regarding this liability and the exposure it creates for the organization.
Create a maximum 1,050-word report, excluding title and reference pages.
Address the following in the report:
• Evaluate the impact of business tort liability on the pharmaceutical industry in general. • Determine the growth of business tort liability in the pharmaceutical industry and discuss where and why tort reform is needed. • Assess the impact of business tort liability on corporate liability under the Alien Tort Statute. • Explain how business tort liability can be reduced through the implementation of the risk management process. •
Analyze how business tort liability can escalate to criminal liability.
Cite a minimum of two references for the five content areas taken from a business or legal resource. One reference must be from the University Library.
Format your paper consistent with APA guidelines.

Putting Sales at the Center of Strategy How to connect the C-suite’s grand plans with the field realities your salespeople face by Frank Cespedes
EXECUTION
Daily Word Search or many years Document Security Management (a pseudonym) had a thriving business in retrieving and shredding or securely storing organiza- tions’ documents. Executives and their as- sistants loved its one-stop-shopping value proposition, and the sales force cultivated deep relationships with them. By the early 2000s, however, it was clear that cheaper digital storage technology, especially the cloud, would disrupt the company. So DSM introduced its own cloud-based storage and directed the sales force to bundle it with traditional services.
The results were disastrous. Many of the salespeople lacked the technical knowledge to work effectively with clients’ IT departments. Pricing was a problem, be- cause the physical and digital services had very different cost structures. And in spite of being trained to bundle offerings—a key to the new strategy—reps often sold only the lower-priced, digital service. Contract renewals for traditional services fell sharply, as did profits. DSM modified its sales compensation plan, but then digital sales dipped; meanwhile, new competitors began signing clients. Ultimately DSM spun off its digital unit.
October 2014 Harvard Business Review 23
What went wrong at DSM goes wrong at many companies: Management embarks on a strategy without considering the reali- ties facing the people who must execute it with paying customers.
Research indicates that only a fraction— according to some studies, less than 10%— of companies’ strategic plans are effectively executed and that firms deliver just 50% to 60%, on average, of the financial perfor- mance their strategies promise. One reason is that strategists, years removed from cus- tomer contact, are often blithely unaware of the embedded strategic commitments that daily field activities represent and have an obsolete vision of the company- customer interface. I describe the problem as a divide between “strategy priests” and “sales sinners,” to convey that plans made in the C-suite can be “sullied” by the people who live and die by monthly quotas if those plans say nothing about how sales should allocate resources.
The sales organization should be part of every conversation about strategy. U.S. companies cumulatively spend about $900 billion annually on sales efforts— three times their spending on consumer advertising, more than 20 times their spending on online media,
and more than 100 times their spending on social media. Predictions that the internet would dis- intermediate sales have not panned out: Although sales forces in some industries have shrunk, the overall number of sales- people in the economy is unchanged.

Suppose you decide (as did Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckerberg) to start a company.

Suppose you decide (as did Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckerberg) to start a company. Your product is a software platform that integrates a wide range of media devices, including laptop computers, desktop computers, digital video recorders, and cell phones. Your initial market is the student body at your university. Once you have established your company and set up procedures for operating it, you plan to expand to other colleges in the area and eventually to go nationwide. At some point, hopefully sooner rather than later, you plan to go public with an IPO and then to buy a yacht and take off for the South Pacific to indulge in your passion for underwater photography. With these issues in mind, you need to answer for yourself, and potential investors, the following questions.
What is an agency relationship? When you first begin operations, assuming you are the only employee and only your money is invested in the business, would any agency conflicts exist? Explain your answer If you expanded and hired additional people to help you, might that give rise to agency problems?
Suppose you need additional capital to expand and you sell some stock to outside investors. If you maintain enough stock to control the company, what type of agency conflict might occur?
Suppose your company raises funds from outside lenders. What type of agency costs might occur? How might lenders mitigate the agency costs?
Suppose your company is very successful and you cash out most of your stock and turn the company over to an elected board of directors. Neither you nor any other stockholders own a controlling interest (this is the situation at most public companies). List six potential managerial behaviors that can harm a firm’s value.
What is corporate governance? List five corporate governance provisions that are internal to a firm and are under its control.
What characteristics of the board of directors usually lead to effective corporate governance?
List three provisions in the corporate charter that affect takeovers.
Briefly describe the use of stock options in a compensation plan. What are some potential problems with stock options as a form of compensation?
What is block ownership? How does it affect corporate governance?
Briefly explain how regulatory agencies and legal systems affect corporate governance.

Ellen G. White and the Gift of Prophecy

RELT 190 Ellen G. White and the Gift of Prophecy
Research Paper (40%of final grade)
A 2,500-word research paper is required on a relevant subject to which the instructor has agreed.
The student should decide on a topic with the instructor no later than by the end of class on Friday, the week of October 29 to November 3, 2017.
The paper will count for 40% of the student’s final grade.
Students should select a topic of their choice based on Ellen White’s published writings. Topics may range from Adventist history, theology, lifestyle, etc. Students are encouraged to write on a topic of current interest to them. The instructor will provide you with a sample of the format for your research and other guidelines to help you produce a well-written paper.
The purpose of this research paper is to enable students to read the writings of Ellen White on a particular subject to gain a good understanding of that topic.
Students will select a topic of research upon which Ellen White wrote in sufficient length to support about 15 hours of research or reading. In selecting the research topic, students need to be mindful not to select a topic that is too broad (ex: Holy Spirit) which would require countless hours of reading or one that is too narrow (ex: second resurrection) that would be thoroughly researched in one or two hours.
Students will investigate relevant materials on the selected topic in published books and periodical articles of Ellen White’s writings. You may read the relevant articles in the Ellen G. White Encyclopedia as part of this project. Here are some general topics from which students can narrow their focus:
- Ellen G. White, Inspired Author or Plagiarist! - Ellen G. White and the Adventist Health Message - The issue of Prophetic Authority in the Writings of Ellen White - Ellen White and Dress Reform - Ellen White’s Role in the Development of SDA Doctrines Respect of Sources: The students must respect the intent of any author they quote from when using their work as a source for their research paper. Misinterpreting an author and “making” them support a point they don’t support, then building one’s own argumentation on that misunderstanding, can only lead to shaky conclusions. It is a failure of critical thinking.
Referencing Sources: Students must follow the 8th edition of the Turabian rules for the references they use in their paper.
Students can reference this website for assistance in using Turabian for assistance:
https://writing.wisc.edu/Handbook/DocChicago.html
Flow: The paper and essay must flow nicely from beginning to end, following a clear progression in logic, and using good argumentation and clear points. Every paragraph should 2 contribute something useful to the whole. In the end, readers should realize that the paper’s author took them on an intellectual journey that led them to a new or deeper understanding or appreciation of reality, idea or concept

Financial Markets and Institutions Final Projects

Financial Markets and Institutions Final Projects
Teams have all been assigned a sub sector within the financial services industry for their deep dive company research analysis projects. Additionally, Teams have selected a company that has been approved by the Professor. The goal is to follow CFA standards and guidelines to come up with a comprehensive evaluation and buy/hold or sell recommendation on your company. Teams will write a formal paper and prepare and deliver a PowerPoint presentation to the class. Grading will be 70% on the paper and 30% on the presentation. Since we are covering different sub-sectors within the Finance industry – teams should note any specific metrics that are important in the evaluation process for their sub-sectors. It is also important that each team prepare a valuation (utilizing at least two methodologies – e.g. comparison and DDM) and three major competitors plus and industry standard as part of its financial analysis. More details follow below. And two resource folders are up on Moodle with several sample projects for your review. Teams will have 20 minutes to complete their presentations. All team members must participate and there will be a confidential evaluation form at the end of the project to help with final grades. Students should use all available University resources including the Bloomberg Lab and Clark Library to complete the final project. Note an executive summary of the projects is also required and should not be longer than 2 pages long.

Is there anyone who is knowledgeable in digit forensics and using FTK?

Is there anyone who is knowledgeable in digit forensics and using FTK?

Peter N. Stearns, editor, World History in Documents: A Comparative Reader, Review

Overview: The documents paper, which is the second longer-format assignment of this course, gives us opportunities to work with the building blocks that form history. By definition, primary sources are written documents and non-written objects created by persons living years ago, which can be used in order to show the conditions, the perspectives and the events of the past. Such items allow today’s readers and viewers to connect with the ideas, points of view, lifestyles and material conditions of earlier generations. Carefully utilized, primary sources ultimately give users clearer insights into human nature, the practices we do and the objects we use today. By noting differences and similarities, primary sources can help us to build an appreciation of diversity and to understand ourselves and our world better in the present time.
Assignment goals: This assignment, weighted as 35% of your course grade, will look carefully at the primary document, a source written by a person of an earlier generation and originally intended (usually) for use by a contemporary.
This paper has the following objectives in mind:
· To unearth lifestyles and worldviews of people from the past, as seen in primary sources.
· To gain skills that can help us to explore documents for history courses.
· To see how a study of the past can help us to better understand ourselves today.
Extra credit: Add a third document in the chapter (two or more pages writing) = 2/3 letter boost.
Instructions: The documents that you will be writing about must come from Peter N. Stearns, editor, World History in Documents: A Comparative Reader, Second Edition. Because this book covers all eras of history, you will SKIP content from chapters 1-15
(corresponding with the book’s Parts I and II, pre-modern eras). Select one chapter from chapters 16-36 (corresponding with the book’s Parts III, IV, and V), then prepare to cover some of the documents SOLELY from that chapter. (Because content in each chapter is grouped thematically, you will NOT be allowed to select documents from more than one chapter.) After selecting a chapter, pick any two documents from that chapter. (Each chapter contains three to six documents.) To avoid writing a very long or superficial paper, it would be wise to stick to covering two documents. For the purposes of this assignment, a “document”
consists of all content under the boldface title and under the boldface overview of content.
To see how this works, let’s look at examples from chapter 23, “The Opium War.” The two items grouped under “China: Official Statements,” will count as one document. “Britain: A View from a Participant” covers a single document. The third document appearing in this chapter falls under “Wei Yuan’s Defense Plan, 1842.” So even though there are multiple items under “China: Official Statements,” the grouping counts as one document.
There are a few things you should do before examining the written sources. Read the chapter’s introduction (found in boldface at the very beginning), which highlights the historical setting of the theme and previews some of the main ideas found in all of the documents. Also, read the introductory remarks (also in boldface) right before each of the documents you will tackle. A quick look at the “Questions” and “For Further Discussion” in the chapter can also point out ideas you should look for in the readings.
Once you’ve prepped, start reading the first document you will cover. Look for what you believe to be the key points of that document. I will not expect you to discuss EVERY important item in a document. (That would make the paper much too long or very superficial.) Select at least three (but no more than four) points that you will mention in the summarization (reporting of facts) of that document. Once you’ve summarized the first document, report some of the key facts about the second document. In other words, you will cover six points total in the summarization part of your paper. DO NOT include analysis in the summation section; this will come later. Just report core facts (information) from the two documents.
The second part of this term paper is reserved for making sense of the readings. Although it can take many forms, analysis is an assessment (a critique) of content. Oftentimes, this means you will discuss ways items of the same category are similar to or differ from one another (comparing and contrasting). This falls in line with the way Stearns handles the content in this comparative sourcebook. Here is a short (not inclusive) list of aspects that could be analyzed:
· Ways (different/similar) people respond to circumstances.
· Mentalities (perceptions of the “other”; motives for action).

· Devices/technology
· Strategy/tactics (military and civilians apps)
· Degrees of overall clarity of a primary source
· Terminology (neutral or charged/biased language; archaic or contemporary terms)
· Any inquiry that asks for an explanation of why or how something took place (causation).
· Any inquiry that seeks an explanation of historical impact (consequences)
· Any inquiry that asks for an explanation of the pre-conditions.
· Social aspects (gender; ethnicity; class; immigration; activism)
· Political aspects (government structure; positions; elections; treaties)
· Economic aspects (agricultural; financial; commerce; manufacturing; job conditions)
· Cultural aspects (religious; artistic; sports/entertainment)
· Environmental aspects (weather/climate; terrain; ecosystems; species)
· Military aspects (planning; uniforms; weaponry; equipment; communications)
You could also base your analysis solely on queries indicated in the “Questions” or the “For Further Discussion” portion of the chapter. I will leave it up to you to decide on your approach to analysis. Some of you might base all of your analysis on the list of aspects that appear above. Others might decide to write only on the “Questions” or “For Further Discussion” queries in Stearns. And some might do some of both.
Paper organization: Following an introduction of a few paragraphs, which will preview for the reader the content that you will cover, the completed assignment will consist of the following two sections: (1.) Summation of key aspects of your first written source, followed by summation of key aspects of the second primary document, and summation of the third document if doing extra credit, and (2.) Analysis of the written sources, followed by your personal views of this assignment. Finish your paper with a few brief remarks on your experiences with the sources that you selected. For stylistic reasons and due to the nature of this assignment, you are encouraged to write with self-references (“I,” “we,” or “us”) throughout. Be sure to experiment to find the balance of summation and analysis that works best for you.

Seafood – is it sustainable? Can aquaculture feed us all?

a synthesis of all the topics discussed throughout the semester. Non-organic.
Or, conversely, what is the history of the term “conventional agriculture” • Look at the
history of one of the world’s great cuisines – Chinese, Indian, French, Italian. How has that cuisine changed over time? What factors have lead to that change? How do the food systems of the wealthy affect food systems of the poor, and vice versa? • Analyze the history of ethnic foods in the United States. - Research the history of restaurants – either fine dining, or fast food. • How did the “Columbian Exchange” affect food systems throughout the world? • What is “authenticity” in cooking? In an age of globalization, are there any “authentic” forms of cooking left? • How do cultural identity and cuisine relate? Religious identity and cuisine? • Foods and Nutrition: - Choose one of the cooking methods we discussed and look at how that cooking method is expressed around the world (ie the technique of long, slow cooking of meats is expressed as BBQ in America, ragouts in the Mediterranean region, hot pots in Korea, etc). The project is very open to student interest but should follow set standards for academic writing, using peer reviewed sources rather than non-peer reviewed
or mass market sources (ie Wikipedia, etc). Grading will be based on the following: 20% length requirements 40% content (thesis, supporting evidence, adequately addressing opposing viewpoints) 20% grammar, syntax, spelling 20% proper use of APA citations, proper use of sources

This is a list of examples of topics that would fit into the course, feel free to explore one of these topics, or create a topic
of your own choosing on the subjects discussed.
· Sustainability: Should we eat meat? What are the environmental/ethical issues around meat production in the United States (or
other countries)? ?
· Is there a place for Genetically Modified Organisms in a sustainable food system? ?
· Organic vs. Non-organic. Is organic always the best choice? What factors could limit the environmental or nutritional benefits
of eating “organic”? ?
· Make a case for a vegetarian diet. As world population grows, will it be necessary for us to move to a more vegetarian diet? ?
· Do insects play a role in future diets? ?
· Seafood – is it sustainable? Can aquaculture feed us all? ?
· History: What is the history of the term “organic agriculture”? Or, ?conversely, what is the history of the term “conventional
agriculture” ?
· Look at the history of one of the world’s great cuisines – Chinese, ?Indian, French, Italian. How has that cuisine changed over
time? What factors have lead to that change? How do the food systems of the wealthy affect food systems of the poor, and vice
versa? ?
· Analyze the history of ethnic foods in the United States. - Research the history of restaurants – either fine dining, or fast
food. ?
· How did the “Columbian Exchange” affect food systems throughout the world? ?
· What is “authenticity” in cooking? In an age of globalization, are there any “authentic” forms of cooking left? ?
· How do cultural identity and cuisine relate? Religious identity and cuisine? ?
· Foods and Nutrition: - Choose one of the cooking methods we discussed and look at how that cooking method is expressed around
the world (ie the technique of long, slow cooking of meats is ?
expressed as BBQ in America, ragouts in the Mediterranean region, hot pots in Korea, etc).???Analyze a specific diet – cultural
(Mediterranean, Okinawan, etc.) or fad (Atkins, Paleo, etc) and research the cultural context. How did the diet come about, was
it a result of current scientific thinking or was it a reaction against current scientific thinking? How do the diets hold up
over time?
This paper is a large percentage of the final grade of the course and as such research should begin early in the semester.
Research should meet academic standards discussed in GWAR (if students have not taken GWAR or are currently taken it). The
project is very open to student interest but should follow set standards for academic writing, using peer reviewed sources rather
than non-peer reviewed or mass market sources (ie Wikipedia, etc).

Around nine in the morning on April 24, 2013, Rana Plaza, an 8-story building in Savar, Bangladesh, collapsed catastrophically in a hail of twisted concrete, steel, and sewing machinery

Around nine in the morning on April 24, 2013, Rana Plaza, an 8-story building in Savar, Bangladesh, collapsed catastrophically in a hail of twisted concrete, steel, and sewing machinery. At the time, more than three thousand garment workers were on duty in five separate factories, located on the building’s third to eighth floors. 1,134 workers, most of them young women, were killed, and more than 2,500 others were injured, many seriously. It was the worst industrial disaster in the history of the garment industry. Several dozen U.S. and European retailers and brands—including Walmart, Benetton, H&M, the Gap, Inditex, and Loblaw—were at the time or had recently sourced products from one of the Rana Plaza garment factories. In the wake of the collapse, these companies and others that had contracted production to suppliers in the low-wage, fast-growing, and notoriously unsafe Bangladeshi garment industry faced an urgent challenge: What should they do now, after Rana Plaza? This case enables students to explore the causes of and responsibility for the collapse of Rana Plaza and to evaluate various courses of action for Western apparel companies doing business in Bangladesh.
Who was responsible for the collapse of Rana Plaza, and why do you think so? In your answer, please address the responsibility, if any, of the building owner, factory owners, Bangladeshi government, U.S. and European governments, Bangladeshi workers and their advocates, clothing customers, and apparel retailers and brands in the United States, Canada, and Europe.
What could be taken now to reduce the chances of a similar tragedy occurring in the future? In your answer, please consider what actions, if any, the various individuals and groups mentioned in Question 1 could take.
Of the various options you mentioned in response to Question 2, which do you think is most likely to be effective, and why?
Develop a typology of corporate strategies to prevent worker abuse by contractors in complex supply chains (e.g., put political pressure on local governments to develop stronger regulations; develop codes of conduct).

Assignment: Small-Scale Qualitative Research Project–Coding of the Interviews and Theme Analysis

Assignment: Small-Scale Qualitative Research Project–Coding of the Interviews and Theme Analysis
At this point, you have conducted semi-structured interviews and have a wealth of “unmanaged” data. This week’s Assignment will give you foundational practice in making sense of that data through coding and theme analysis. You will discover repeating ideas by grouping related passages of text together (coding) and will record the repeating ideas into larger groups that express a common theme.
To prepare for this Assignment, review the Transcript and Coding Template document provided in this week’s Required Readings and consider again the transcription of your interviews that you submitted in Week 4.
By Day 7
Submit a completed coding and theme analysis for each interview based on the template provided in this week’s Learning Resources. Your analysis should include the following:
· Your research question for these interviews
· A list of the codes you developed from your interview transcripts
· A description of your thinking or working process, explaining how you developed your codes, including any evolution of your coding system
· In-text coding for your interviews (This means that you are to select and identify chunks of data [codes]. Then create a list of themes and their descriptions developed from the codes. Keep your interview transcripts intact, and show where you have applied the codes to the text.)
Note: Be sure to use the Transcript and Coding Template to complete this Assignment. Also, refer to the Week 5 Assignment Rubric for specific grading elements and criteria. Your Instructor will use this rubric to assess your work.
