Q1- In the article "IT Doesn't Matter", the author compares IT to electricity and railroad industry here in the U.S. From an systems analyst perspective (the perspective of this class), do you believe what the author is stating? That IT has become a commodity vs. a way to differentiate yourself in business?
If you agree, how can IT create system(s) to help the business if all businesses in the marketplace have access to the same hardware & software?
If you disagree, please explain why.
Q2-This question again focuses on the article, "IT Doesn't Matter." In the article the author states three rules for IT Management. The third rule is: "Focus on vulnerabilities, not opportunities."On the surface, this rule seems to go against IT's traditional purpose/approach. However, currently, many companies are focusing on risk much more than ever before. Even the HIPAA legislation discusses risk and risk management.
So, as a systems analyst, should we be analyzing problems/vulnerabilities within our business OR should you be looking for better opportunities? In answering this question, please take a stance (meaning do not answer "well it is really both"). Please pick one.
Q3- In the articule "Learn to Let Go," the topic centers around the rise and fall of the software game called Duke Nukem. First, question - what really happend to Duke Nukem? (Just briefly explain.)Second, as an analyst, what would you have done differently or what would you have changed in the process of buidling other versions of Duke Nukem? Let's face it - the initial offering of Duke Nukem was a success. However, the maintenance and new versions were the issue. IT hits this issue all the time. Maintenance & support is a challenge for any organization. What can be done to help?
