Assignment 1: Key Concept paper

Assignment 1: Key Concept paper
Concepts can be described as abstract objects and can be used as the constituents of propositions.
Any field of study will have certain ‘key concepts’ which students of that discipline must master before being said to be ‘expert’ or adept in their discipline.
In the discipline of tourism studies, sustainable tourism development has emerged as one of the key concepts and is very important to tourism policy, planning and development. In fact, sustainability in its fullest sense is a key theme of our course text.
In this assignment, you are asked to write a 750 word paper (minimum) on this key concept explaining its meaning and importance to tourism policy, planning and development.
Your paper should:
? Briefly explain the difference between “sustainable development” and "sustainable tourism" (do not just copy Hall on this);
? Briefly explain why these key concepts have emerged as key issues in contemporary tourism policy and planning;
? Outline a key issue/some of the key issues or tensions that are associated with sustainable tourism;
? Explain some of the ways that the stakeholders in tourism have engaged with what Hall calls the ‘sustainable tourism imperative’ and how this has impacted contemporary tourism policy, planning and development (2008, p. 20).
Remember, you are trying to demonstrate that you have gained significant insights into this key concept in tourism planning and you can evaluate critical issues relating to this key concept. It is important for you to remember that our topic of study in this course is tourism policy, planning and development and for your assignment to address the key concept’s relevance to our topic of study; do not provide lengthy discussion of abstract theory of sustainability or sustainability in other contexts as this will result in poor marks.
You are expected to utilise the first four chapters of our course text to shape your thinking on this key concept as well as to conduct some brief research in other major tourism books and journals of relevance to the topic of sustainable tourism development. There is not a specific number of references that you must cite for this assignment; you should be able to ascertain when your research is sufficient for you to explain the key concept and address the four facets indicated above.
