Substance abuse and dependence take a very high toll on families and society. It can be very difficult for an individual to stop using substance(s). The relapse rate is very high.
4. Class, what do you think are some of factors that make it difficult to stop using a substance once a person is addicted?
It seems there are many things these days that can become addictions. Yet most are not listed as addictions in the DSM.
5. What are some other things that people can become addicted to, Class?
6. Do you think any of them should be included in the DSM?
Many teens can present with extreme behavior characteristics. However, one of the diagnostic criteria for personality disorders is that the person must be over the age of 18.
7. Why do you suppose this is Class?
The video, "Teenage Drinking: Fats and Fiction" directed by Jim Curlis was interesting and it displayed the realities of teenage drinking.
Points that I noticed not only in this video but others dealing with substance abuse is that the teenagers always mentioned that one reason they partake in drinking alcohol or drugs beside trying to fit in with their social circle is because of boredom, hinting that they are looking for something that spikes their interest. Another thing I've notice is that through their expression it seems that they are not getting attention from adults that provide the appropriate guidance but from those that have an attitude of, "let them find their own way.
Moreover, in my opinion, it's easy to tell an adult, "know your own limit', however when that is told to a teenager who is not really an independent thinker, due to social pressure or wanting to fit in, that might translate to my limit is whatever my friends limit is.
The video gave good recommendations about avoid the consequences, but I never heard the recommendation of not getting involved.
Interesting.
