 OBJECTIVES
Students will demonstrate their ability to
  • Locate source material relevant to intercultural and international issues, using on-line and data base search logic.
  • Evaluate, analyze and synthesize others’ ideas so as to develop and support own argument and purposes, using course content as an analytical framework for writing
  • Identify and incorporate intercultural research sources (6-8) for both individually-authored and group-authored papers
  • Paraphrase, summarize, and quote source material with increased accuracy and sophistication
  • Provide correct attribution (in-text and reference page) for a variety of source materials (scholarly, popular, on-ground, and on-line) using APA citation format
DIRECTIONS
 Choose an American co-culture of which you are not a member and research at least the following:
  1. What is the origin of the group?
  2. What are the major features of the group?
  3. What is the composition of the membership?
  4. How does a person become a member?
  5. Approximately how many members exist of this co-culture?
  6. Are the members found among particular racial or ethnic groups?
  7. Where are the majority of the members located geographically?
  8. What are the goals and objectives of the group?
  9. What are the beliefs and values of the group?
  10. Are there official organizations that represent the group? Describe them.
  11. What are the group-specific activities in which the group members participate?
  12. Is there specific language or jargon which is associated with the group?
  13. What is the group’s relationship to the dominant culture of the United States?

Note:  You may not be able to answer all of these questions specifically for your co-culture.  If you cannot address a question, note that and provide an explanation.  These questions can serve as a guideline as you complete your research.
Possible Co-Cultures—Try to be as original as possible! 
Remember you cannot choose a co-culture of which you are a member. 
Consider the following categories to discover American co-cultures:
  • religion • social • gender           • ethnicity        • sports             • employment
  • habit • illness             • disability        • volunteer       • style               • games
  • interest • family             • orientation     • politics           • hobbies
Note:  Only one student in the class will be permitted to research one American co-culture.  Acceptance of co-cultures will be on a first-come, first-served basis.  If you want to be sure that you will be able to discuss a certain co-culture, submit a proposal to me ASAP.
AMERICAN CO-CULTURE PROPOSALS                                                                                               
 Submit a proposal for your American co-culture research.  Include the following in your proposal:
  1. Identify the chosen American co-culture.
  2. Articulate the reason you choose to research this co-culture.
  3. Describe your current impression of the co-culture.
  4. Speculate where you may find sources for your research.
  5. Discuss any currently known controversies about the co-culture.
ESSAY                                                                                                                                               
 Requirements:
  1. APA Format (title page, abstract, references page)
  2. APA Documentation (at least six reliable sources)
  3. 5 to 7 pages (excluding title page, abstract, and references page)
  4. An argument regarding the American co-culture must be in evidence. I MUST see a claim about the group supported with reasons and evidence.
  5. The paper addresses in the relevant fourteen questions listed above. (Some answers may be more in depth than other answers.  Other questions, such as “how you become a member,” might not be relevant at all: for example, teenage mothers.)
ESSAY EVALUATION
 The essay develops an argument about an American co-culture; is 5 to 7 pages in length; uses at least six sources.
  1. The essay clearly and logically addresses the relevant fourteen questions listed in the assignment and organizes the information in a logical order.
  2. The paragraph development of the essay displays unity and clarity of development and use of transitions from paragraph to paragraph
  3. The style and usage of language in the essay is appropriate with a clear, interesting voice.
  4. The essay presents a variety of effective sentences. (varied lengths and types)
  5. The sentence structure of the essay does not contain fragments, run-ons, or comma splices and uses parallelism and subordination effectively
  6. Grammar issues, such as verb form and endings, tense sequence and consistency, subject and verb agreement, plurals, possessives, qualifiers, articles, pronoun form and reference, comparison, have been considered and addressed.
  7. The paper format follows APA form, including Cover Page, Abstract, Running Head, and References Page.
  8. In-text documentation created in appropriate APA format—quotations, paraphrases, and summaries documented correctly in text.
