What exactly is a bribe?

What exactly is a bribe? Is it any kind of payment to a professional for doing something he/she would not normally do otherwise? Consider a restaurant that gives police officers a free meal per shift. They are doing this in order to receive extra protection during this time. Is this an unfair advantage that other restaurants aren't getting?
What would you say about this and can you think of another borderline example that might not arguably qualify as a bribe?
