Programs such a value-based-purchasing, coupled with reimbursement reductions and increased competition by stand-alone community based health services providers (e.g., independent surgi-centers) have placed significant limitations on the resources available within acute care hospitals. Ironically, compliance with some of the metrics used to evaluate such hospitals (e.g., prevention of 30-day readmission, HCAHPS) requires creative use of existing resources and/or additional resources. Given these elements which currently exist within the external and internal environment, describe in some detail at least two strategies which hospitals should employ to allocate their resources to ensure their long-term viability and fulfill their mission and vision.
