The Johnstone assignmentis an introduction to one creative person. (You’ll see some of the themes I mentioned (e.g., work habits, personality traits, mental health issues, childhood experiences, relation to authority) This is an introduction to a book on theater improvisation. I think he was one of the post-war innovators in this area and was asked to share his methods. I’m having you read the introduction where he was asked to write about his life. To many students, it can seem very random and scatter-shot. (Having read it many times for this class, I’ve noticed a number of themes.) The “quiz” is basically a reaction paper. As you read (many students find they need to read it a second time), notice your reactions (positive, negative, baffled, etc.) and write about four of them.
For each section, be sure to give brief (1 – 2 sentence) recap for the reader followed by your reaction.
