A brand of leadership
Essay 1 focuses on leadership models or theories that you consider to be most effective. This will ensure that you
start the capstone with some clearly defined ideas about how you want to think and feel and act while leading each
day for the next ten weeks and beyond. It will also serve as a reference point; you will be able to use this
document in the future, to examine how your ideas about leadership have changed and developed.
Your essay should be brief and clear and include these elements:?
1. Abstract/introduction: one or two sentences that highlight the main purpose and point of your essay.
2. Personal context-history: in which you recall the leadership studies and experience/s that have been most
valuable to you in your development as a leader; and you recall the studies and experiences that have been most
important in your preparation for completing your course requirements.
3. Preferred or selected theories or models of leadership: identify what model/s of leadership are you most
familiar with, and most comfortable with. Are they the best approaches for leading your project? Explain.
4. Utility: explain, with an example, how your selected leadership model/s might be used in future project
interactions.
5. Defining it: Is leadership, the way you practice it, a science? Is it an art? Both? (What is your evidence?)
The essay should be in paragraph form, with thoughtful order and sequence and transitions from one paragraph to
another. It does not have to follow the 5-section order outlined above. Clarity and brevity is very important. APA
format. Use citations correctly, please. Review the rubric before submitting your paper, please. The two-page limit
(a real challenge, to be sure) does not include title page, or abstract, or references and citations.
