Impacts of the media
The media has a large impact on how we view the criminal justice system. Most major news sources focus on violence or rare events such as mass killings, schools shooters, or riots. Journalists, television or radio commentators, bloggers and others often use language that is designed to incite a specific response. In this discussion, you will find two different portrayals of the same incident and compare and contrast the two sources and consider how different readers on the jury may perceive information.
Recently, there has been much attention to police-involved shootings (most notably in Ferguson, MO and New York) and the aftermath, including protests and riots. Find two different articles from two different sources about these cases (either specific to Ferguson or NY or both) and post links to the articles, an image of the headlines, or a summary for videos. Can you tell from the language the author or presenter is using what message they are trying to get across? If two different jurors had read the separate articles, do you think they would come to the same conclusion? How could this ultimately contribute to a wrongful conviction?
