The materials you read and watched highlight particular states of mind. What are they? What's the relationship between these states of mind and empathy, and how do these activities and materials relate to our discussion of empathy?
Is empathy a natural human reflex we all possess? Can we develop our ability to empathize with others? What barriers prevent us from empathizing? This module begins to address these questions.
1. Do the following activities:
Activity #1:
There are people you see nearly every single daya spouse, roommate, co-worker, friend, child, etc. You know these people well and could describe in detail what they look like. Without alerting them to what you're doing, pick three of these people and find something on their face you've never noticed before.
Activity #2:
You're going to have a series of conversations this week with people. These may be one-on-one or small group conversations, classroom lectures, experiences with customer service people, and any number of other human interactions. Select three of these conversations and rank them on a scale of 1 to 5, where 1 is "I didn't
feel gotten by this person at all" and 5 is;This person totally got me.
2. Read all the materials
The activities you performed, the video, and reading all point toward a similar state of mind. Describe this state of mind. How is this state of mind related to empathy?
