The learning outcomes for this module are:
By the end of the module students should be able to access, analyse and critique sources of evidence effectively
using a range of approaches. You should also continue to study effectively using a range of academic, professional,
personal and interpersonal skills as appropriate for level 5 studies. In particular you should be able to:
1. use appropriate information technology applications and other methods to retrieve evidence to support practice
2. analyse and evaluate evidence from a range of sources using a critiquing framework based on established criteria
3. demonstrate a degree of autonomy and independence in learning, monitoring own effectiveness through reflection
and evaluation of outcomes

Working in health and social care
It is important that practice is based on the best evidence available, i.e. you know that you can justify the care
that you deliver. Therefore whilst continuing to build on PD1, PD2 will help you to further develop in all areas;
the teaching and learning in the module will have a particular focus on the following academic skills:
Demonstrate critical thought and judgement in considering and discriminating between competing issues and values
Read, assimilate and synthesize arguments from different types of primary and secondary source material
Use a variety of techniques to retrieve and analyse information
Use techniques to evaluate sources of information and data, based on established criteria.
Simpson & Courtney (2002) state that the critical thinker adopts the following characteristics:
Open mindedness, having the ability to appreciate alternative perspectives and different opinions;
Being inquisitive, having a desire to investigate new things to gain knowledge and understanding;
Truth seeking, sufficiently inquiring to gain new insights;
Analytical in ones approach to critiquing evidence and the inferences that can be drawn
from the evidence;
Organized and meticulous approach to problem solving;
Self-confidence with self- awareness of own [individual] ability to use and critique available
scientific evidence to inform decisions.
ASSESSMENT (You should also refer to the section on p20 of your IPL Handbook on the
presentation of written work; additionally, refer to pp15-22 concerning assessment etc.).
The module assessment has TWO parts (see pp15-22 of your IPL Handbook for further details of
the assessment process):

Part 1: Critique of a research article (2500 words). You will need to:

1. The question / aim / objective of the study;
2. Design / methodology;
3. Sample / subjects / participants; 4. Data collection methods;
5. Data analysis and results;
6. Ethical considerations
